| .mystic romance |
Gone are the days when the wives of mariners stood watch on the Widow's Walk, longing for their seafaring husbands to return from a long trip at sea. You can reclaim that sense of lost romance with a weekend trip--together--to the shores of Mystic, Connecticut.
This quaint but vibrant town is best known for the Mystic Seaport, the museum that tells the story of America's historical ties to the sea. You can imagine yourself in the past at their recreated 19th Century village, and then stroll the waterfront to gaze at the tall ships and restored antique vessels. The Mystic Aquarium is another great destination, where you can enjoy the ocean's treasures up close. And no trip to Mystic is complete without a sail on the water. Rent a boat from the museum or, better yet, take a romantic sunset cruise on the schooner Argia.

After a long day of sights and sun, you'll need a quiet place to curl up together. Stay at The Whaler's Inn, which offers luxury rooms with a whirlpool tub, fireplace, and river view ($255 per weekend night). They also have a host of special packages, if you're looking to find something different that suits you both. The inn is just a short walk from lively shops, restaurants, antique centers, and art galleries in Mystic's historic downtown. Inside the inn is a Zagat-rated Italian restaurant, but we think you'll better appreciate the old-world charm of The Captain Daniel Packer Inne. Nestled in a 250-year-old building on the Mystic River, this restaurant and pub offers local seafood in a charming New England setting.
The coastal drive from New York City will take you less than 3 hours. If you'd rather both enjoy the view, then just hop on Amtrak at Penn Station for a direct trip to Mystic ($110 per person, round trip).
