The 4th of July falls on a Wednesday this year, so you have the perfect excuse to free yourselves of travel plans and spend your Independence Day in the city watching the fireworks together!
You won't find a better pyrotechnic show anywhere in the world than the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks. Every year, this landmark NYC store launches it's spectacular from three points: the East River, the South Street Seaport, and the Statue of Liberty. Here are some the best places to see it for free--just make sure you get there early!
FDR Drive
Join the masses on the elevated roadways of the drive, which will be closed to traffic for fireworks viewing between 14th and 42nd Streets from 7 to 10pm. Pedestrians can enter at 23rd, 38th and 42nd streets.
South Street Seaport
For a great party location where you can see all three launch points on the water, check out the River to River Festival leading up to the fireworks. Access to the drive is from Pearl Street only.
East River State Park
This brand new park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is a welcoming open green space with stellar views of the East River (Kent Avenue and 9th Street).
Long Island City
Long Island City hosts an annual Fireworks Festival featuring music, food, games, and a great view over the Manhattan skyline. The fun happens at the Hunter's Point Pier (Borden Ave and 5th Street).
