.perspective: don't sweat it

Coming out of the subway yesterday morning at 23rd and Broadway, an old man with a cane gingerly made his way up the stairs. As he reached the top, a shrill voice called out, "This is the worst thing you ever did to me!" It was his wife waiting for him at the top of the stairs, a scowling face with frizzy hair. Apparently they had come out the wrong exit and now had to make their way across the busy intersection to get to where they were going.

An unfortunate mistake in the stifling summer heat for sure, but if that's the worst thing he's ever done, we think he's doing okay.

It's important to keep your problems as a couple in perspective. It's easy to let something small escalate into a larger argument, especially when you're stressed from work, or tired, or just in a bad mood. For every pet peeve that irks you about your partner, you can bet there is one about you in return.

We know "don't sweat the small stuff" is a cliche, but there is truth to the idea that you should choose your fights carefully and let minor things pass without comment. We're not saying you should always hold your tongue and end up holding a grudge, but that you may want to make the choice that some issues aren't worth a battle.

So before you pick a fight over having to cross an extra street, take a moment to be thankful that at least you get to cross it together.
