| .weekend getaway: art basel miami |
Mid-July may seem an unlikely time to think about a winter getaway, but it's the right time to plan for this year's Art Basel Miami Beach before hotels quickly fill up.
For four exciting days beginning December 6, Miami Beach is alive with alternative art events, gallery exhibitions, and a demanding art-inspired social calendar, making south Florida the nexus of the contemporary art world.
Like its sister event held this past June in Switzerland, Art Basel Miami Beach is a juried art fair, where more than 200 galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia exhibit 20th and 21st century artwork by more than 1500 artists. There are also a variety of public lectures, programs, and exhibitions, which makes the fair considerably more than just a sales event. All of this happens in the city's beautiful Art Deco District, within walking distance of the beach and many hotels and restaurants.

Art Basel Miami Beach has grown a lot since it began in 2002. Several satellite fairs are now competing for collectors' attention, including Scope, NADA, and PULSE. Also, many public and private collections mount "must see" exhibitions, such as at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, which are often a bellwether of emerging trends and tastes in contemporary art.

Whether you're a novice or serious collector, you'll find art available at all price ranges, from inexpensive multiples to multi-million dollar works. But demand is extremely high and competitive, so it helps to have a little guidance. Experienced art advisors like Linn Press can accompany you at the Miami fair to help you make museum-quality selections. Having a planned itinerary helps the collector and fair-goer manage their art and travel budgets most effectively.
There's still time to book a room at some of the luxurious hotels in Miami Beach, but you have to act fast. Contact Turon Travel for the latest availabilities.
