News flash! According to Business Week, "Pricey Jeans Are So Passe." Apparently the designer jean craze led by popular brands 7 For All Mankind, True Religion, and Antik Denim is over. Sorry, but we don't buy it. Jeans are a staple in men's and women's wardrobes, suitable for the hottest restaurants, most exclusive clubs--and like a a great suit, they need to fit perfectly.

No matter how much you're going to spend on jeans, you want them to fit right. What better way to find the perfect pair than to have them custom made. The city is full of stores that let you make your mark on a great piece of denim, from getting the perfect fade to adding some eye-catching embellishments to designing the perfect pants from scratch. Then, no matter how much you pay, you can both walk tall in your own unique style.

One store we like offers (literally) a "product sewn in earnest." The Earnest Sewn brand of denim is committed to quality and workmanship. Kiss that assembly line goodbye! The majority of each pair of jeans is sewn by one person, and three people follow each garment through every stage of production. Then--along with company president/designer Scott Morrison--they hand stamp the jeans after every step to maintain the highest level of quality. As if you needed any more convincing, a special wash process ensures that no two pairs of jeans are the same. An Earnest Cut & Sew is the brand's concept store, which opened in the Meatpacking District in 2005. Amid the exposed brick, polished copper tin ceilings, and knotty wooden floorboards you can have your own pair of "sewn in earnest" jeans custom made. Select from the rolls of denim lining the walls, choose the perfect designs and buttons, then sit back, relax, and enjoy an espresso while your perfect jeans are made to order.

Earnest isn't your only option, of course. These two other high-end shops are known for their great fits, superior styling, and unparalleled custom work:
