.weekend getaway: montreal

Want a midsummer getaway rich with old-world charm and world-class nightlife? You'll find European style close to home in Montreal.

With endless summer festivals, from Jazz to Just for Laughs, to its own World Film Festival, this French Canadian city is a great choice for a weekend away. A nonstop flight from JFK takes about an hour and a half, about as long as a drive out to the Hamptons. Stay at one of the many chic boutique hotels, like Opus. Expect cushy robes, decent in-room multimedia options, and, of course, Wi-Fi access.

The central urban location is a short walk or subway hop to Montreal's Beaux Arts Museum, which is currently exhibiting one of Canada's artist icons, Emily Carr (through September 23). Take a leisurely stroll along Rue St. Denis, akin to New York's Greenwich Village, where you'll find a neighborhood full of cafes and artsy shops. A pleasantly strenuous walk up Mont Royal affords you an amazing view of the city. Stop in for a snack at Olive & Gourmando before exploring Old Montreal and then head back downtown for dinner at Europea on Rue de la Montagne, where you can splurge on the chef's degustation with wine flight or enjoy a table d'hote (triple fois-gras presentation!).

Montreal has been known for its exuberant nightlife since the dry days of American prohibition. Exotic dance clubs and adult entertainment shops, which are ubiquitous downtown, alongside high-end stores, might surprise even the savviest Americans. Being an adult definitely has its privileges here.
