If the dog days of summer have got you both feeling hot, sticky, and cranky, head for the water where you can relax with a cool breeze before you blow your tops. Since you do live on an island, you don't have to go far to catch some waves.
The Manhattan Sailing School is offering weekend sailing lessons from the North Cove marina in Battery Park City. The three-day intensive course will teach you the basics of sailing, such as hoisting and trimming sails, rigging, docking and securing a boat, proper commands, and sailing terminology. Begin with a classroom session on Friday night, and then you're ready to set sail on Saturday and Sunday. You'll be taught on a J/24 sailboat, considered the sports car of sailing, and courses are limited to 4 students per instructor--so you'll have plenty of personalized attention and hands-on experience. The cost is $590 per person, but when you go together you'll get a group discount of 5% each. Take along another couple and get 15% off each! There's no better way to see Manhattan.

Didn't think you could learn to surf in NYC? Well technically you can't, but Adventure Society will pick you up in Midtown and take you down to the Jersey Shore to show you how to surf. No experience necessary! Spend the day learning how to read the waves as they roll in, balancing and turning on your board, and the unique thrill of catching a wave and riding it along the shore. Their next trip on Friday is almost full, but book their September 8 trip today and get an early registration discount rate of $125 each (after today it's $135). The package includes a 2 hour group lesson and then a 2 hour board rental so you can put what you learned into action and ride the perfect wave into the end of summer.
Both give you the opportunity to share in a new hobby together!
