| .weekend getaway: saratoga springs |
For centuries people would travel to Saratoga Springs to "take the cure" in its healing mineral waters. While there are more reasons to visit today, a weekend in this charming city will still leave you feeling revitalized and refreshed.
Saratoga Springs is known for its beautiful Victorian architecture, so what better way to experience the city than to stay in one of its gracious homes. We suggest the Union Gables Bed & Breakfast, a stately Queen Anne-style house built in 1901. You'll be within an easy stroll of shops and restaurants in the city's bustling downtown.
This is racing season at Saratoga Racetrack, one of the most beautiful and historic tracks in the country. The biggest weekend in town is the upcoming Travers Stakes on August 25--the oldest thoroughbred horse race in the country--but the season continues until Labor Day. There's nothing like the excitement and energy
 |
of a good horse race (especially when you win!), but allow yourself to unwind and relax with a soothing mineral spring bath in one of the city's famed spas. At the Roosevelt Baths and Spa, you can indulge in the natural healing powers of their water and choose from a full selection of luxurious spa services.
The Philadelphia Orchestra spends its summers at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), a beautiful amphitheater in a tranquil, park-like setting. Hear them up close in the main seating area or relax on the expansive lawn and have a picnic. Their last performance is August 18.

The city is steeped in history, and it's well worth a visit to the Saratoga National Historical Park, where more than 3000 peaceful acres commemorate a crucial American victory in the Revolutionary War. Take the self-guided battlefield tour and see the restored country house of American General Philip Schuyler and the 155-foot Saratoga Monument.
Pay tribute to Saratoga's storied past with a fine meal at The Olde Bryan Inn, a
restaurant at the edge of town once owned by Alexander Bryan, a hero of the Battle of Saratoga. The menu combines traditional American fare like the Olde Fashioned Turkey Dinner with international dishes like Sesame Honey Soy Wasabi Ahi Tuna. An award-winning wine list and desserts like the delicious Morgan's Chocolate Chip Pie make this the perfect spot for a romantic dinner.
